THE MARION L. BRITTAIN FELLOWS PROGRAM
Overview
In 1990, as part of a broad new emphasis in digital media, Georgia Tech established the Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Brittain Fellows are recent Ph.D.s in literature, communication, rhetoric, composition, technical and/or business communication, creative writing, film studies, performance studies, critical theory, cultural studies, and related fields. Equally important, they share interests in teaching communication(especially writing) using digital pedagogy and exploring cultural studies of science and technology. Appointments are competitive, and current Fellows represent more than 20 universities.
Appointed to the Georgia Tech faculty with Instructor rank for up to three sequential one-year appointments, Fellows teach three sections each term in Georgia Tech's Communication Program. They design courses informed by the degree programs within the School of Literature, Communication, and Culture (LCC). LCC offers a B.S. in Computational Media, M.S. in Digital Media, and a Ph.D. in Digital Media, as well as a B.S. in the cultural studies of science and technology (STAC). A virtual environment supports these programs and encourages faculty to experiment with multimodal communication, especially digital media, as they develop courses related to their research interests.
In addition to teaching, Fellows participate in semester-long seminars and reading groups that address the theory and practice of digital pedagogy and the theory and practice of technical communication. Fellows can work with senior faculty mentors to complete Post-Doctoral Certificate Programs in Digital Pedagogy and Technical Communication.
In addition to a competitive salary and faculty benefits, Brittain Fellows receive offices, computers, some travel funds, and assistance with professional development. The majority of Fellows alumni have moved to tenure-track appointments at institutions across the country.
