FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do I have to take ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102? [back to top]

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia requires that all students in the state`s public colleges and universities satisfy a basic composition requirement. At Georgia Tech, we have introduced elements of the WOVEN (written, oral, visual, electronic, and nonverbal) curriculum into our communication sequence to prepare you for the variety of communication tasks you will encounter in other classes and in your careers.

Can I receive credit for ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102 through advanced placement examination? [back to top]

If you receive the following standardized test scores before registering at Georgia Tech, you may place out of ENGL 1101:

* College Board Advanced Placement (AP)
- English Literature and Composition Test score of 4 or higher
- English Language and Composition Test score of 4 or higher

* International Baccalaureate (IB)
- English Test score of 4 or higher
- SAT II English Subject Test score of 750 or higher

Advanced placement is not typically awarded for ENGL 1102, which covers an array of WOVEN skills and research methods that cannot be easily or accurately evaluated through standardized testing procedures.

When should I take ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102? [back to top]

Most students will be automatically registered for ENGL 1101 in the fall in which they enter Georgia Tech (students who place out of ENGL 1101 will be automatically registered for ENGL 1102). You should take ENGL 1101 in the first semester, since most ENGL 1101 sections are offered in the fall, and most ENGL 1102 sections are available in the spring. If you don`t follow this standard schedule, you will have to compete with incoming first-year students for available seats in future fall semesters.

Many of the academic units at Georgia Tech have decided that their graduates would benefit from advanced coursework in communication. They therefore require that students in their major take LCC 3401, Technical Communication, which further develops students` written, oral, visual, electronic, and nonverbal skills in the context of a specific discipline or the workplace.
