The class combines hands-on production work with the in-class analysis of video techniques in order to expand skill in visual communication/visual narrative. The course covers the basics of preproduction, production, post-production, and use of videos for interactive projects. Technical processes such as videography, lighting, sound recording, non-linear editing, are covered through in-class workshops and individual and group projects completed outside of class. As the class covers a wide range of topics, this class requires determined attention and participation.
Zettl, Herbert (2011) Video Basics, 6th edition, Boston: Wadsworth (earlier versions are fine and can be found used on Amazon)
Bordwell, David, and Thompson, Kristin (2001) Film Art: An Introduction. 6th ed. New York: McGraw-Hill
This term, the class also offers the opportunity to work on outside projects for real clients. Students interested in such projects should notify their interest in an email to the instructor. Work on these projects will require travel and availability outside normal class time.
Course Schedule
The schedule is available online. The dates in the schedule should be seen as a general orientation and might change.
You will be responsible for purchasing your own DV tape. The multimedia desk in the library sells 60-minute DV tapes for $5.
You need to purchase an external hard drive to store and transfer video files. All other means are simply not feasible.
Digital video cameras, tripods and lighting kits are available through the LCC Video Lab. Check-out times will be announced.
You’ll want to put together a kit of tools that help you shoot, such as reflective boards, lens cleaners, and whatever else you personally rely on when shooting video.
Should you have any technical problems with a LCC lab computer, server or server account, please send an email to LCC Computing Support at lcc-support@iac.gatech.edu. Please copy me on this email so that I am aware of the problem.
The video editing lab (355) and video production studio (369) are available for use 24 hours per day, except during periods where the university is officially closed. I will get your Buzzcard activated for access. You will also need to know and remember the security code for the doors.
If you accidentally set off the alarm, please call Georgia Tech Security at 404-894-2500 if after office hours.
Do not store your video files on the system hard drive of the lab machines, instead you need to use the scratch drive. You are responsible to keep a backup of all your files.
All assignments are due by the start of class on the due date. One letter grade will be deducted for each class that the assignment is late.
You will receive two major grades in this course. Short assignments and quiz will add up to one major grade. The final project will count as the second major grade. Grade breakdown is as follows:
40% Short assignments and quiz cumulative
40% Final Project
20% Class participation and attendance
