Short Assignment 1: due Friday

Show, Don’t Tell

Create a video self-portrait. This assignment is all “in-camera” with no external editing allowed (but you can do “in-camera” edits). No literal speaking or text is allowed (this includes filmed signs). Have at least 15 different shots/scene changes. The video must be under 2 minutes. In fact, we will only watch the first two minutes of the video.

Begin reading chapter 1. Also read pp. 66-74. (Version 5: p. 68 - 75)

Short Assignment 2: due next Wednesday

Create a 12 - 20 panel storyboard from a film sequence. At the top of the page, write the film name, the director, and the act (see scripting notes from last Thursday). Include production design elements of blocking, framing, camera angle, depth of field, lighting and location. Note the key actions, lighting and location information for the shot in text below the image of the appropriate shot. Use symbols to describe camera movements and placements.

Include at least three production design elements for an A. Be prepared to point them out and discuss them in class. The assignment is posted at:

Shoot a sequence from a script. Come up with your own visuals and apply the composition rules we have talked about.

Pitch Final Project to class

Expand on one of the projects in class, utilizing the methods and techniques of that genre as well as the general skills you have learned during the semester. You may work alone or in teams. Total length should be less than 5 minutes.

One possibility is a music video for a local band.

Prepare to pitch your idea to the class next week
